Gary and John -

     Thanks for your prompt comments!
     .
First, I took the fan out, blowed some dust and out if and gave it a few finger twirls.  I then applied external 12vdc to it and it started running.  So far so good - I put it back in the rig, set it to run continuous ("on"), and it started running continous - again, so far so good.

Next, I changed the running setting to "AT" and noticed the fan wasn't running when I was transmitting, so I put it back on "on", and it did not run at all.

Second, about the "Demonstration" mode settings (also on manual page46).  I held the UHF volume control shaft in and held down SET while turning the  power on.  The display then showed normally - but a few minutes later, it went into the annoying "Demonstration" mode again.

I even tried the VHF volume control shaft plus SET while turning the power on - still the same old story.

He could probably find an exact replacement fan on the internet, but with not being able to turn off the "Demonstration" , I think he will probably be returning it to the seller.

See page 46 of the manual, Demonstration display. It is a toggle function.
PDFs of the manual are on line if you didn't get one with the radio.
