Sam,
The K3 DOES allow for external ALC input through it's auxiliary input 
connector.  It does default to off, as the designers of the rig prefer not 
to use ALC and discourage its use, but it is on the rig and they do 
extensively describe its use in the current manual.

I have a K3, but have only used it with an Alpha amp that doesn't provide an 
ALC output, so haven't crossed the bridge of using ALC with K3.  Assure your 
friend that it is there.
