Same problem with the 7700s. I walked across the carpet, touched the vfo and poof....  the encoder died a pitiful quiet death.

Perhaps the following will add some perspective;

Which view will each of us take?

Same here.  A few years ago I was thinking of dumping the aging 781 for a
PRO-III or newer.  A rather prominent ICOM individual advised me against it.
I listened.  The IC-781 and the Timewave DSP-599zx are good enough.  Really,
how much more is there to hear on HF?

The more I hear thses stories, the more I am glad I listened.

I guess I have been very lucky.
My 22 Yr Old IC-725, IC-746 Vanilla Version and IC-756Pro3 have not
suffered.
I discharge my self to ground prior to connecting antennas and powering up
the shack.

The antenna designs are DC grounded.
I think the secret to success is a antenna that discharges static build up
before it reaches dangerous levels.
I use a very old TH-3 Beam, a 160-M Sky-Loop,
a 80-M Sloping Delta-Loop and a DC grounded 50 Ft Vertical.

define "well known".  I don't.

above and beyond any other model. Whenever I talk to someone on the air that
uses a 746 pro, I always ask about any issues. It is very rare to find
someone that has never had an issue. Once again, nothing scientific but
personally I have talked to approx 50 owners who have experienced failures
and 7 who have not. Yes I did keep track. I concur with your evaluation of
the tolerance of solid state electronics but the 746 is in a class of its
own.

>> To All; I am almost willing to wager that most every brand of amateur
solid state tadios have their share of issues associated with ESD and every
nature of spikes that could cause damage. It is the nature of solid state
electronics to be less tolerant when the parameters of solid state devices
are exceeded. I have owned solid state radios for the last 35 years and have
never lost a front end or PA module ever. I have had power supply failures.
We all know that power supplies are not that efficient and generate the most
power loss and heat.
>>     I question if anyone knows the percentage of ownership of the various
brands of radios. Does anyone have this data? This is how we can best
determine the failure rate of a particular brand and model radio.
