Since I can't afford a new(er) rig, I have a definite bias toward what I
already own. Having the 740 and 745, I will say I agree with reviewers
who pointed out the receiver on the '745 was not as hot as the one in
the '740. I <love> the '740 (Malcolm Scott just gave it the once-over a
few months ago, BTW). For a long time, with my previous Field Day crew,
the CW guys would ask for my '740 for their station (2A). Boy, did I
strut around proud!
It's funny how many times I've used contemporary rigs at Field Day whose
owners have no clue what you can do with IF Shift, Passband tuning, RF
Gain, etc., to achieve signal-slicing that rivals DSP rigs (IMHO). It's
<harder> on a '740, but better than on a new rig when the operator
doesn't have a clue how to use what s/he's bought!
I'm just sayin'...
