[ICOM] IC-2710H microphone problem

I purchased a used IC-2710H off eBay, with a microphone and cable. The mic did not bear any model number, but the specs indicate it took the HM-98. The red light on the upper right hand of the mic comes on when I press the PTT, but will not key the rig. I ordered a replacement mic and cable, advertised to be a HM-98, but when it arrived it's a HM-98S and it won't key the rig either. I've read the posts above, but I don't understand anything other than the comment "It's a puzzlement". Any suggestions to this un-informed senior citizen would be muchly appreciated. 73 - George, N9EJS
