I came across my Icom IC-R10 scanner that has not been turned on for
probably 8 or 9 years. No batteries in it, I remember taking them out as I
knew it would probably be quite some time before I used it again. Installed
4 AA standard dry cells and nothing. Yes they are in the way the markings
show. Yes they measure 6.50 volts across them when installed.
Also found the charge unit for it when using ni-cads. Checked the charge
switch and it was on so switched it off. Plugged it in and all is well. It
works. Unplug the wall-wart - radio dropped power. In on, out off.
Installed different new batteries - same thing. Visually checked battery
contacts at end batteries and they appear to be OK. All appear to be tight
as verified by voltage readings again verified with second set of batteries.
Was thinking it might be the charge connector disconnecting the batteries
when connected but that cannot be the case as it would not be able to apply
charge to the ni-cads if they were installed and the would not need the
little switch under one of the batteries that does the disconnect for dry
cells from the charge plug.
Anybody know if there is an internal battery that may have gone dead? Know
that all the memories I loaded way back then are still alive and well.
Ideas ?????
