The key insert in front is mainly for the internal keyer, the insert in the back is for a straight key, but you must set it to do what you want in the menus.
Another problem is if you are using a stereo plug or mono plug the way it is wired depends on which radio you are using it on. ( see your owners manual for each radio you use ) A key wired for a Yeasu is very different than for an Icom. ( ground, dot or dash on the stereo plug ) I use my key on several radios and made an adapter for the Yeasu stereo plug and another for the Alinco.
If you are using an External keyer like I do you must be set it up for a mono plug and it must be correctly wires tip positive or maybe tip to ground and don't forget the menu must also be set correct and again see your owners manual
