My IC-7400 (= IC-746PRO) was damaged most probably because I did not
ground the coax tip BEFORE reconnecting the antenna after a static snow
storm when I was living in France. These storms can develope
unbelievable voltages to the antenna which can act as a capacitor. I
sometimes heard the disconnected RG-58 coax to short ("nacks nacks")
during such a storm. I also had a spark to jump from a disconnected coax
tip to my keyer - the distance was over three inches.
Damage to my IC-756P3 came in from the GROUND lead during a not-so-close
thunderstorm - everything else was disconnected. Using a quality coax
switch for antenna grounding instead of disconnecting the coax has been
succesful for several years now, but who knows...
Yes, I do miss the old tube rigs which never failed for this reason.
