[ICOM] [ic706] Mic jack on Icom 706

Thanks to everyone for the feedback so far. After casual playing around in the CQWW contest this weekend I see that I need some sort of voice keyer, and getting on RTTY again would be nice also. I am looking for a cheap way to interface the 706 with the computer-cheaper the better. I was hoping to just run a line from the computer jack to the mic jack. Sounds like it is doable but will need a little more work.

YOu do not use the voltage on the mic jack. Just feed the audio into the mic input and use a capacitor to block any DC that might get into the signal line. There is often too much audio comming out of the Icom, so a resistor or two may be needed.

You can usually use the VOX to do the keying in most modes.
Just make sure the mode you are using has some audio on it before the actual data starts.

The voltage comming out of the Icom mic is just to power the preamp built into the mic or a touch tone mic. I hooked up a Sure mic to mine and used the 8 volts to power up that mic as it usually operates off a 9 volt battery. Works fine.

If you go to several sites, there are some that show a schematic of the interfaces. Look them over before you start on one.

Unless you have the parts on hand, there are some places that sell the interfaces already built almost as cheep as one can be built.

I have an Icom 706 original and am wondering exactly what is needed for the microphone on this rig. In terms of the mic jack, does voltage need to be applied along with the audio in? I am wondering if I can run a cable from my computer sound card out jack to the audio in and ground connections on the mic jack and get it to work with VOX, or is some sort of voltage or other signal also required to get the audio to work correctly? I am still not completely clear about the Icom mics and the preamp being in the mic and things like that. I should be, though.
