[ICOM] IC-736 auto tuner question - REPLY

I really appreciate all the help you fellows are giving this OM, so that I can QSP it to my OM friend who just got his AG Sunday and is only now trying to figure out how the IC-736 works!

One local ham told me this evening, that after the auto tuning function stops, you press the TUNER button to turn off the auto tuner function - and go ahead and transmit with the display showing THRU on it.

My friend is 35 miles away (hard for me to get over there very often), so all I can do is try to understand what I read in the owners manual that I downloaded.  I've read and re-read page 37 many times, and don't see where it specifically tells you to send out a carrier to activate the auto tuner, so that's one of the things that's hard for me to grasp the specifics of the procedure.

I'll pass it along to him - and the local ham that I mentioned is going over to visit my friend Thursday, so maybe my friend with the IC-736 will get "direct" instructions!

P.S.  By the way, my friend has one of those ZS-6 (?) dipoles that's been written up recently, and it's not supposed to need a tuner for 40/20/10 as I understand it.

I have an IC-736,  here's what 'ya do....
The little button on the left that says "tuner"...push it so the display 
says "THRU" that means the
tuner is off.
Now....if you push it once, it will be on, and go to the last memorized 
setting for that frequency range.
If you push AND HOLD it, (starting from off) you will hear a tone, and the 
gears will spin while the rig finds a match. Now THAT is the newly memorized 
best setting for that frequency range.
By the way...before you do all this...hit the meter switch so the display 
says SWR....this way, you can watch the meter approach happiness, (lowest 
SWR) while the rig does its' thing.
All rigs work the same way, but some have a button that says START....or 
some other method of going into a short duration transmit so the smarts can 
figure out the best settings to spin the capacitors.

IC-736....a great rig, and kinda hard to find....6 meters also..built in 
power supply....Just great!!

I'd be glad to help out if you need more help on the rig!

OK thanks Gary - I'm going to ask if there is anybody out there who has an 
IC-736 in operation and can verify what the correct procedure is to activate 
the automatic tuner when you change from one frequency/band to another. Do 
you have to press the TUNER button before you transmit to activate it, or do 
you just go ahead with a transmission and the tuner will then automatically 
adjust? I can't understand what I read on page 37 of the instructions.

George,

The tuner will tune to a memorized preset however it will not tune
properly until it gets a shot of RF power on a large frequency or band
change.
Changing bands like you mention it would be normal for the tuner to tune
while you are talking, maybe even tuning once and tuning again on the
next transmission until its satisfied it has the lowest match possible.

Sometimes its ok to give the tuner a shot of carrier when you change
bands. Just be mindful when you do that others will hear a whistle in
their receivers from the carrier transmitted.
I don't have the IC-736 manual handy but seem to remember holding in the
tuner button will also force the tuner to tune. You have to do that for
6 meter tuner operation as the tuner is not automatic like on HF in the
IC-736.
