They do sell USB extension cables in both "active" and "passive"
arrangements. They are usually about 16 foot long also. I've coupled
two together once as a test and they worked fine.
I'm thinking though that I could not plug an active to an active and
I had to go active on the computer end and then passive for the 2nd
extension. Then again, it could have been whatever device I was testing with.
I know I controlled a device at the end of the extension cables that
also had about 16 foot of cable. I do not recall the device I tried
but I think it needed power so I used a powered usb hub at the far
end. This setup gave me close to 48 feet of extension. It can get
flaky though once you exceed the standard limit. I think the device I
mention next would be preferred.
They also sell USB to Ethernet adapters. I've had really good luck
with those before. As long as you have an ethernet port, you just
plug a small box in near the spot you need USB and then run some type
of client on each computer and away you go.
I think they are called USB servers and I know Keyspan made them but
I think TrippLite bought out Keyspan recently. I've controlled
several radios via USB over a usb server device without any
issues. These devices also allow the USB devices attached to them to
be shared (not at the same time) between multiple computers. They
will support about any usb device you can plug into them.
One thing I'm not sure of is if the available devices have Mac
drivers. I'd think they do but some things still amaze me!
