VCO trimmer caps.
Oh gosh I forget the cut off frequencies there are 4 ranges but
everything sounds distorted. The service manual will tell you. I used to
be able to rattle those off the top of my head :(
Even the ceramic caps can go bad. You might grab a voltmeter and poke
into the VCO and look at the lock voltage or use a scope, it should be
pretty steady state when locked though it does change as the dial is
tuned so be sure to look at the specified frequency on the dial.

The rig works extremely well on 10-meters CW& SSB, but when I tried it on 20-meters CW all of the signals have an "auroral" effect on them, if you know what I mean. Even the 100-KHz crystal calibtrator sounds sorta "gurgly"---but again, only on 20-meters. Ten is A-OK.
