Patrick,
The other posts are correct on the cw key, it will engage the reading on
your swr meter.
I use an Icom 746Pro but it all should be the same.
I can tune in Rtty,CW(with key pressed down) or Fm( with foot switch
engaged).
I use Fm all the time to check swr's when tuning antenna's and when tuning
the Amplifier. I am not sure if you have fm on that rig or not.
But rtty will give you a correct reading. Cw will give you a correct
reading with an attached key pressed to engage the 718 to transmit.
Hope this gives you some options. By the way the microphone probably acts
like a cw key.
