icom 761 is not a icom 745, the mic circuit design and the af mic amp output are not the same, i have had several 761's over the year's and they all required the mic gain to be reduced when using compressor...

I've got an Icom IC-761 which I recently acquired. I've got it running ok except for the fact that when one turns on the compressor (speech processor) you have to crank back the mic gain or the radio will have severe transmit audio distortion. There is a pot in there R196 which appears to be the output pot for the processor although the service manual doesn't refer to it as such. I know that the owners manual does mention setting the mic gain back when using the processor but that's a bit retarded. I've used the IC-745's and one sets the mic gain for proper alc action and you can turn on the processor without having to back the mic gain on that model. I'd appreciate hearing from someone who's worked on the 761 with an answer to fix this problem.
