I shall try to address your questions in-line.
Cheers for now, 73,

Subject: Re: [ICOM] IC-781 pricing?
Thanks for all the replies regarding the IC-781, both direct and via the
list.
I have another question or two -
1. What was the last serial number 781 made (approximately)? The one I just
picked up is 31xx. Original owner purchased it new in 2000, so I'm guessing
it was a late production?
>>> I believe it was 39XX.
2. The optional 2.8KHz filter (FL103) - I'm guessing this filter affect
transmit as well? Anotherwords, can I expect better TX fidelity by running
the SSB wide filter?
>>> The transmitted occupied bandwidth will be 2.8 kHz at -6 dB, as opposed
to 2.4 kHz with the FL-80, but the adjacent-channel selectivity will suffer.
I went in the opposite direction with my IC-781 (in my station 1993 - 1998).
I replaced the FL-96 (455 kHz/2.8 kHz) with an FL-44A (2.4 kHz), and the
FL-102 AM filter with an FL-223 (9 MHz/1.9 kHz) to provide a narrow SSB
filter. The FL-80/FL-44A pair improved Twin PBT operation and
adjacent-channel selectivity significantly.

3. Does anyone know the Icom part numbers for the six rack handle screws
when the handles are installed? Or even the 18 cover screws? I need to
order a set of screws for the handles, and maybe a spare set of the regular
ones, if I ever decide to remove the handles later on. I might even want to
order some new ones for the case. The radio is mint, but when the original
owner removed the cover to set some of the option settings, the screw heads
suffered a little. I otherwise wouldn't even bother, but the rest of the
radio is almost perfect. So for a few $s, why not? Shipping will be more
than the darn screws! I noticed while looking over the service manual that
they don't show the rack handle screws anywhere. Another thing I notices is
that even the regular cover screws aren't numbered in the drawings, and not
listed in the parts list. At least I don't see a screw in the parts list
with a quantity high enough to equal the amount on the radio (18). The only
ones I could find a part # for is the original four for the front panel
sides.
>>> The cover screws are BiH M4 X 5 ZK BS, Icom P/N 8810004690 (these are
actually the screws for the R9000, but should fit the IC-781). I am not sure
of the handle screws, but Icom P/N 8820001380 (for the R9500 handles) may
fit. You may wish to check this information with Icom Parts in Bellevue WA.
I might be crazy, but this 781 is a pleasure to listen to on RX, especially
75 phone. Maybe the #s aren't as good as the newer radios, but my ears seems
to prefer it over some of the other radios here (756PRO2, 765, 950SD, etc).
>>> I like my IC-7700 even better!
Thanks
Eric
