Have you ohmed the longer (failing) cable out for continuity? I have, many
more times than just once, made up a cable and then found that one (and
only one) conductor wasn't making good contact with its bit of metal in one
mod-block plug -- generally because it was about 100 Ångström units too
short. Very irritating.
