I know there aren't as many technically skilled hams as there used to be, but I have heard folks on the list over the years that had replaced their own displays,
and if you still have an old one stashed around, I'll gladly take it off your hands for the purpose of redesigning the backlight system.
Any display module from the 756 line (pro, proII, proIII, even original) would serve the purpose quite nicely for what I have in mind. One that is inoperable or damaged is preferred.
I've been doing some work with LCD backlight retrofits on assorted displays - using LEDs, sometimes along with new defusers and light pipes - to do away with
bad cold cathode backlights. I've had good success with laptops, iPods and other devices I've experimented with and I'd like to give the 756 a go, since the backlight is a common failure issue. A bonus is that if the display's only problem is the backlight (even if the problem is in the cold cathode power supply - which accounts for more failures than the tube itself) you will receive the display back, hopefully better and brighter than before. It's been a good while since I've seen the older original 756 (non-pro) but if I recall correctly, the display module "sandwich" from the original (non-Pro) backlight and diffuser system is quite similar in design, even though the LCD component is monochrome. I'm offering this to the list in return for all the good Icom info the folks here have provided me over the years.
I'll settle for a dead 746 (any model) display if the backlighting system is remotely similar mechanically, I've not taken one apart, so I don't know... Please reply off-list, or at least CC: me if replying to the list.
Thanks all!!!
