Hi Blair,
I have remote mounted an ICOM ID-800H and a Kenwood TM-D710A in my
mid-sized Jeep Commander SUV by placing the T/R units under the steering
column behind a piece of molding that hinges down for access to the fuse
block, etc. I found a small metal 'shelf' behind the molding that the
rig mounting brackets are attached to. The DC cables are a short run
through the firewall to a circuit breaker mounted near the battery. The
control heads are mounted at the front of the center console for easy
viewing and control.
This setup keeps the mic cord length roughly the same as if the rig were
mounted as one piece under the dash or beside the console, meaning no
extensions are required, and has worked well for me. Ditto for the
external speaker cables.
Good luck and 73!
