Francis:
I have the original 706 and run it mobile for years. The 706 Mark 2 G will
give you Hf/2M/440. It is compact an can be easily mounted.
Set up suggestions:
Power: from your battery, will require running wiring system to the radio.
Mounting: The head is detachable and can be mounted on an equipment
mount(self tapers into transmission hump). see page 36-37 HRO catalog. There
is a cable(extra cost) that connects the detachable head to the rig. The rig
could be mounted under your front seat,
rear truck wall etc etc. You can discconnect the head and cable( 15 feet in
length +-) and carry the head inside the house. Some theft prevention
there. When you get in the vehicle slide the head on to your mount and plug
in the connection cable to the rig unit.
There are tons of ways to mount your rig. This is just my way. I have run
mobile for 30 years, it is fun.
Antenna's: I run a High Sierra Screwdriver for HF. I dont get out of the
vehicle, tune the rig and your on the frequency. Some hams use "ham sticks"
per each band. This requires in and out of vehicle to change
sticks(antennas) and the bands.
Amplifier: Probabley two units. I used the ameritron 500 watt mobile.
about 50 watts of drive. They make that unit with a remote head now. You
could mount both remote heads on a nice piece of black plastic, then on to
your mount and then the hump. If you willl look on the screw driver sites
and mobile mount sites lots of ideas out there for you to get started.
I can't recall the other unit but it too is a good moble amp.
2meter/440 would require antennas and mounts.
Well this will get you started thinking about things. If you need help ,
let me know.
Icom 706 is a good unit, dependable and I have had years of service from
them.
