Larry,

I can name two real good reasons. $Money$ and Features.
Just because its newer, doesn't always relate to better performance. It
depends on what aspects you are comparing.

I still have my IC-735 that I bought in 1988 and it is still performing to
expectations and I have not noted any deteriorate in performance. I use it
in my Motorhome. I hope to get many more years service from it.

Many of the older radios are more user friendly. Its nice to have some of
the newer features, but they make it more difficult to operate with all the
menu driven functions.

I'm not against advancement, but I guess I came from the old school: "If it
ain't broke don't fix it."
