Kurt,
I have over 30K mobile contacts on both the IC-706mkIIG and the
IC-7000. There is a lot to like and dislike about every compact radio
where compromises abound. The following are some of the dislikes:
1.) The AGC problems that Rob Sherwood has written about are definitely
there but some people don't mind the AGC attack and others hate it.
2.) The new color screen is not nearly as readable in bright sunlight
(mobile) as was the IC-706 screen but it is very nice to look at otherwise.
3.) The IC-7000 is more aggressive about needing higher DC input voltage
and lower SWR if you want max. power out of the radio than was the
IC-706. See http://www.bnk.com/w0qe/IC7000_vs_IC706_mobile_pwr.html
for some measurements I have made.
4.) Some folks do not like the hand mic for mobile (too big) and say the
transmit audio is too bassy. I use a headset with my IC-7000 so I am
using a different mic. There is a guy in AR who modifies the hand mic
for those who don't like the audio. By the way the old IC-706 mic works
fine with the IC-7000 it is a lot smaller.
5.) The extensive menus are difficult to navigate while mobile unless
you are very familiar with the radio. However many people don't mess
with them.
You didn't ask about any good things about the IC-7000 so I won't go
into them other than to say the DSP noise reduction works very well in a
vehicle, the radio has been generally very reliable, and there have been
a huge number of them sold.
