[ICOM] WTB: IC-22U or IC-22S

Mike,
You can modify the IC-22s for the lower 2m frequencies. I have modified
several and at one time had 4 of them on my Packet BBS/Cluster. It is a very
reliable rig after you fix the synthesizer. All the Icom radios of that
vintage used steel feed-thru pins in the synthesizer boards. After a time
the solder connection would go cold due to dissimilar metals. The 22s has 13
such animals. I removed them and replaced them with a short piece of copper
wire. That fixed them.
To put a 22S on the lower frequencies you replace the synthesizer Reference
crystal and add a divide by 2 IC. I used 1/2 of a CD4013. That will make it
tune to the lower part of the band in 5 khz increments. 10.24 mhz CB
crystals work fine. The drawback to this mod, is the radio is only good for
simplex as the shift becomes 400 khz instead of 600. Most of our application
was as packet digis, so it was not a problem. Some were also used as
repeater receivers.
If you can find the 22U, its better, but a lot more 22s's were made than
22u's. Sorry, but I gave away 3 of the modified 22s a couple of years ago.
Except for the DX Cluster, packet is a fading mode in this area.
