[ICOM] Icom 745 speech processor

I am totally frustrated by the Icom 745 manual and shop manual. I can maintain Drake, Swan, Johnson and Collins gear, but I am NOT smart enough to understand the manual for my 745. Given my limitations, can someone tell me if the Icom 745 speech compressor is an RF processor, or is it an AF processor? Thanks.
