If I may use an over-worked analogy, "bang for the buck" comes to
mind. It is a relatively expensive amateur radio, but my Lord the
level of performance it provides is phenomenal. I won't get into the
my-radio-is-better-than-your-radio endless loop by trying to pick an
arbitrary winner, but if the current economy and your own financial
priorities will allow you to spend $5,500 on a new radio (AES web
site this morning), you will be truly amazed and won't be able to
stop smiling for three months (which may freak your wife/husband out).
If someone can't afford to make this kind of initial commitment, I
would suggest an IC-756-Pro III as a "starter radio." With brand new
ones going for $2400 (AES) and clean and pampered used ones under
$2K, everyone should be able to have a very Happy/Merry holiday season.
