[ICOM] RE: ICOM 746PRO Screen Brightness from K3JK

Ed Myers emyers2 at cox.net
Tue Nov 18 00:38:59 EST 2008

My 746 PRO has been repaired by an ICOM service facility after a display
illumination failure.
I was instructed to run the display at full brightness to preclude another
failure.

Hi Mike, One last thing, my 761 was SO touchy, that just the LIGHTEST
tap on the top cover would make it go deaf. Another tap and it would
wake up. I hauled her out to the shop several times and every time, I
'thought' I had the problem 'fixed' when I found loose screws. It would
work for a day or 2 and then the same thing would happen.
Since I cleaned the relay, the radio has worked perfectly for several
weeks.
The relay in question is Icom P/N 6330000490, on the relay is P/N
LY2-0-DC12V. In the 761 the Service Manual calls it RL13. However, in a
small note, it tells you to add '500' to the P/N in the Tuner unit, so
it becomes RL513.
In any case, the research I have done tells me that relay has always
been problematic in a LOT of Icoms.
HAVE FUN!!!

73 and gud luk

Thanks for the reply Gary. No, the S meter is at rest on the left side
of
the meter face ... ZERO signal showing. As soon as I bang on the 20
meter
button, the audio comes alive. Had a reply from a fellow with a 761
that had
the
same issue with audio ... his was in the T/R relay and cleaning it
fixed the
problem.

As for the display, I suspect lowered voltage but I haven't been inside
the
box yet. We'll see. It could also be the result of some rough handling
in
shipment from Orlando to Fort Wayne.

Just in time for the SSB Sweepstakes (of course), and after not being
used on SSB for a month or more, my '765 seems to have developed a
transmit audio problem. To get any RF output with modulation the mic
gain control must be turned up full resulting in only about 10 watts of
RF output and almost no deflection of either ALC or compression meter
positions. That amount of output requires almost hollering into the mic!
With computer-generated audio being fed into the audio input port on the
DIN connector on the rear apron the output power is normal. I have tried
a second microphone with the same results.

I've seen similar symptoms in broadcast audio gear when electrolytic
coupling capacitors age and dry out but since I have no service manual
or schematic on this rig I don't know if that is possible in the '765.
Has anyone seen similar symptoms and come to any diagnosis?

Thanks,

Jack, W6NF

Don't know about the 765, but earlier (740-745) had a problem with the
compressor switch. Symptoms were much as you describe. Replacing it would
restore full output. Cleaners didn't cut it, only replacing the switch was
a
permanent fix.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the ICOM link, Dave, I appreciate it. I will take the rig to
work tomorrow and see if this solves my problem.

I do have a copy of VE3HUR's IC-765 Notes (v1.08, dated December 17,
2005...is there a more recent version?).

Hi, Mike:

Doesn't seem to be the compressor switch but I will check that further.
Someone did send me a link to ICOM that had this information and,
although I did not have any indications of raspy/distorted audio, this
symptom fits my situation exactly:

Hello everyone:
I am trying to read the posts on serial numbers of my 746 Pro. I have read
that above 3351 are ok. does this mean xxx3351? my serial number is
0202855. Is this number considered problematic with the transmit failure?
It is below 3351, and from what I can understand, the last four numbers are
what you go by. I might have a problem with the ic-151 issues? thanks,
John K3JK

  John,

I believe the serial numbers with 7 digits (e.g., 0202855) are assigned
to units that have been upgraded/modified by Icom during the
manufacturing process. Hence, they reflect later production runs
(probably starting about 2 or 3 years ago) than the 4 or 5 digit serial
number (e.g., 3351). So in theory the IC-151 issue was taken care of by
the factory with your unit.

thanks for the information Harry, I appreciate it. And I also have read
that the screen brightness should be run at full brightness to prevent the
display from burning out. Is this correct Harry? Thanks you sir, John
