Mike, I just had a similar problem on my 761. The problem was the T/R
relay contacts. It was an easy fix (once you can get to the relay!!). A
little contact cleaner on a strip of business card fixed her. The relay
has a clear plastic cover. I have found that this particular relay is
used in a lot of Icoms and they exhibit the same problem. This is
listed on Icom's Website as a 'problem' under the 761.
I'm sure Tim is also correct about the solder connections.......

Hi Mike:
I have three IC765s and have observed the same problems in the past.
Most of the issues with the 765 like this are the result of poor solder
joints on the suspect PC board. Many of the problems I had were cured
with
re-soldering joints on the boards (the ones responsible for the circuit
in
question).
This solder joint problem was real bad on the Kenwood TS940 series of
radios
and even some TS930. Take a look at the PC boards in your 765 and you
will
see for yourself where bad solder joints are.
One of the problems during the time the 765 was built was the quality
of the
solder used (recovered solder) in Japan for wave soldering.
The 765 is still one of the VERY best performing (non DSP) radios
around.

I just acquired a 3900 S/N IC-765 as a second radio. So far it's
working well and I'm enjoying it. There are a couple of small issues,
that I can't find any reason for, that perhaps someone on the list can
shed some light on:
Approximately 60% of the time when I power on the radio the audio is
"muted". It's like the T/R relay is in the mute position. If I punch
the 14 MHz button on the keypad and then go back to the original band,
audio is back to normal.
The other oddity is the display which seems to be "dimmed" a bit. Each
display section has segments with a "bright" portion and a "dim"
portion and comparing it to a friends radio, mine display is visibly
dimmer on both the white and red display elements. With no reference
to display dimming in either the owners manual or the tech service
manual, I'm not sure what I have.
Thanks for any help from the group.
