When the audio is muted is the S-meter all the way to 60db over S9?
I suspect the display is either the display going away or DP-6 on the
display circuit board. DP-6 supplies -5 volts around inside the
IC-765 so it could also be the cause of the audio muting though
generally the S-Meter pegs when its goes bad. The bad part is
generally cracked solder joints on the pins used to mount DP-6 to the
display board. generally those joints are cracked in the DP-6 circuit
board which requires removal.
Try sliding an external speaker connector and headphone connector in
and out of the jacks a few times too.
Now will all that written it could also be the T/R relay, though
generally you don't need to change bands for it to work, pressing the
PTT and releasing it usually does the job. If only changing bands
brings it out of this condition I might suspect a relay with in the
antenna tuner unit.
