One more large difference is that the 706 requires significantly less DC 
voltage to produce full power out than the 7000 does.  While this is not 
a big deal in a fixed environment it is for mobile use.  Take a look at

details.  By the way I own both radios and have 30K mobile contacts on 
the 706 and over 10K on the 7000 so I am "slightly" familiar with both 
radios.  About 60% is CW and about 40% SSB.  I now run a battery booster 
with the 7000.
