It's been years, but I'll try to remember details:
The same thing happened to the 735 I ran mobile for a
number of years.
It turned out to be a capacitor that APPEARED to have
been a factory mod (maybe Gary can remember the
details). A small electrolytic installed wiht one lead
OFF the circuit boards had shorted. There was an
obvious wiring addition to connect to the other lead
of the capacitor.
ibid: I purchased the radio new so it was not added by
a previous owner. This item did NOT appear on the
schematic that came with the the radio nor in the
service manual.
Sorry I can't remember more of the details. I did
check my service manual but did not find a note on
this incident. I have worked on a number of these,
primarily repairing the encoders, but have not seen
this mod in any other 735s'.
