Casey, and others reading,

In very simple terms, the full answer will depend on several somewhat
different factors: first the make/model of car; second the age of the car;
and third the willingness of the dealer's service department to help install
an amateur radio. Until last Fall I drove a 1997 S-10 pick-up and used a
wiring diagram found on the Internet to help run the power cable between the
battery and the radio (IC 208H). Last Fall I bought a 2007 HHR. The dealer
(with whom I had a very good relation on service items) flatly refused to
touch any part of the installation of an amateur radio. The battery for the
HHR is located near the spare tire at the back of the vehicle. That saves
having to make another hole in the firewall. The radio will mount easily
under one of the front seats with the display placed in a tray on the center
console. The wiring is all out of sight along one side of the vehicle. In
short, talk to the service department at the dealer or repair shop you trust
then proceed with caution if you have to do the work yourself.

Jim  KD5VXH
