To all concerned
On the subject of frozen encoders on the Venerable old IC-751A an ounce
of prevention is way easier to do then try to repair this problem once
it has occurred. Every five or so years on all my Japenese rigs and
first thing I do when I get a new Icom or Yaesu rig is to remove the
main tuning knob. In this case IC-751A you take off the Rubber Tire
loosen an allan set screw to take off the knob. Instill 1 ONE and only 1
drop of Sewing machine oil or 3 in One Motor oil for small motors.
Rotate the shaft to work in the oil wipe off excess oil. Reinstall knob
and Tire. I also remove the RIT knob and instill one drop of oil on that
encoder shaft also. On some of the other radios IC-706 family and
FT-757GX the main tuning is a pull off hand tight Press Fit. The
FT-767GX requires you be very careful to remove the tire to gain access
to the encoder shaft allan set screw. On the subject of the Back-up
Battery yes the IC-751(A), 745 R71A and 71 series V/Uhf radios have
volatile memory for their operating system. If you find someone handy
with DOS programming the operation Firmware can not only be reprogrammed
if memory is lost but updated to add like the new band at 60m or 5.3Mhz.
without opening the whole radio to TX everywere. You can do that when
you change the Battery and reprogram the Ram Card. I hope that helps you
all.
