I agree with this entirely. This has been and always
will be my belief. As a rule of thumb, heat is
acceptable so long as it is channeled non-destructively
away from sensitive components. An engineer can
argue, we wouldnt have built it that way if it
wasnt reliable. Unfortunately, we must remember
that all manufacturers today, because of the need
to make some profit (or they wouldnt be in buiz),
its unrealistic to think that they would tolerance test each component
(not very likely) It then becomes our responsibility,
the user, (or the radio enthusiast) to mini mize
risk (that is, if we plan on keeping the thing)
According to chemistry, heat tends to break
down substances after a certain point. Occam's razor,
unfortunately, suggests that there is a planned overall average life
expectancy for these rigs, and that even if
we save one area, the rest will degrade at a rate
which is basically equal to any damage the heat might cause.
For this argument (which I dont agree) the reduction in cooling
only extends the life of some areas and others will naturally
need to be replaced by the time anything happens.
