"State of TexasOffice of the GovernorSince its invention in the late 19th
century, the technology and art ofradio have captured the popular
imagination. Early in radio's history,
enthusiasts began to communicate with each other for the purposes of
recreation, personal edification and public service. While hobbyist and
experimenters have greatly improved the technology of amateur radio
operating, the commitment to community service remains the same.
In times of crisis that rendered other forms of communications
unavailable, amateur radio operators have critical emergency information.
Hurricanes Katrina and Rite and the terrorist attacks of September 11,
2001, are
but two major examples.
At this time, I encourage all Texans to learn more about amateur radio
and to recognize the contributions that amateur radio operators make to
the
safety and benefit of our great state, both in times of crisis and in
times of peace.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim June
23-29, 2008, Amateur Radio Operator Week In Texas, and urge the
appropriate recognition whereof.
In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this the
20th day of June, 2008.
Rick Perry
Governor of Texas"
