[ICOM] Microphone audio problem.

I need a slick easy way to reduce microphone audio.

I am using a fully-loaded ICOM IC-901A radio in my jeep. Because of my hearing
problem and road noise in the jeep, I got a Heil Traveller headset to use when I
am alone (about 70-% of the time) in the jeep. But now and then (about 30-% of
the time) I have HAM passengers and will need to use the speaker and HM-14
microphone.

PROBLEM - the Heil headset TX audio is too hot. I can speak quietly - if I
remember to do that. But the road noise is still very loud on the air. I do
not want to change any settings inside the radio because I will need to use the
HM-14 sometimes, and any internal radio changes will make the HM-14 too low for
normal use. The change needs to be made in the headset.

Heil said to try wrapping TP around the mic element. I can try that. <grin>.
But that may modify the frequency response too.

Because there is a drive voltage coming to the Heil mic element from the radio,
I hesitate to just slap in a resistor and check it. It might just be that easy
- maybe..... Not sure. Would that also reduce the voltage to the element? And
would that cause a linear reduction in output? I just don't know

I figure I am not the first HAM to have this problem. Anyone got a solution?
Ideas? Slick, easy and small would be good.

Thanks very much.
