Hello John
Icom replaced the original IC-751 with the IC-751A in 1986 Yaesu
introduced their FT-767GX in tandem with the IC-751A. The Original
Ic-751 came out in Tandem with Yaesu's Great Little FT-757GX in 1983 1/4
Century Ago. Yaesu improved, or so some think, FT-757 with the
FT-757GXII in 1987. Gone was the Great IF Shift and Width Feature of the
FT-757GX the GXII had Shift & Notch instead. The Ic-751A had 3 variety
s the old Logo, The IF Shift variety in 1989 only because of Patent
Dispute had the new current Icom Logo PBT was reinstated in 1989 when
Icom won that dispute. Yaesu's Shift & Width and Icom's PBT are a 6 of
one 1/2 Dozen of the other situation. The IC-751A wins the Contest when
you add the FL-52 or 53A optional CW second Filter. My IC-751A with the
FL-53A is a knife for slicing the stations on Field but not that
helpful. "I can hear'em but can't always work'em". Netting to the other
station's filter to have him hear you is Difficult. With the 500 Hz
filter I can tune up and down a little till he hears me and Work him.
For someone that asked in another E-mail the Improvements and new
features that the A version had over the Original was A major rework of
the Main board AGC circuits were Improved the 4th IF went back to 9 Mhz
vs 350Khz for older Ic-751 a. Improved receiver in the Ic-751A made a
legendary rig in it's day contesters. For CW operators the FL-32A 500Hz
9Mhz CW Filter was Standard and Icom included a much Improved over the
Curtis Keyer Option for Earlier Radios new 4 Bit Microprocessor Keyer as
a Standard feature. If you are looking for a Keyer for the older Icoms
735, 740 or 745 Scott Malcom at MTS sells the Clone for the EK-243 that
uses the same great Keyer Chip the Ic-751A had.
This might be a surprise to some I find the FT-757GX and the Ic-751A
very similar in Capabilities and I like that old FT-757GX a lot. I gave
it a good work out with having a lot of fun using it in the IARU HF
Championship contest. I never did get bored with the FT-757GX and go to
the IC-751A sitting next to it for the Contest. I find the FT-757GX QSK
an absolute Joy at about 20 to 25 Wpm I used in the contest I can copy
faster but can't send much faster. Wow is it nice to hear yourself as
part of the Pile up of stations going back to "Good One" and then hear
your call returned to you. There is absolutely no Relay Noise
Distraction with the FT-757GX the AGC if set fast is so smooth and you
Leave the RF Preamp off on that FT-757GX it works great. I do not use
the RF Preamp on any of my Rigs It just adds to the noise level and
degrades your IMD. The RF Preamp is there you are using the "Wet Noodle
Antenna" then it helps. I think were that old IC-751A shines is were
there are other local contesters on the Band or strong nearby stations
the 751A's receiver will handle that better. I have recently used my
IC-751A's for Field Day and Canada Day Contests. I hope that Helps
