Marc:The IC 7800 is known for its wonderful transmit audio. I have friends that have them, one of whom has two. None that I know of has bad sounding audio. What I know is it is possible to cause it to not sound so good. First, be aware that the SM-20 microphone is an electret microphone, and as such has a higher output level than would a dynamic type of microphone, so you want to keep the microphone gain not more that at the 10'O clock setting. Also I would think you want to keep the transmit bandwidth setting at a wider rather than narrow setting. You most certainly can get the transmit audio setting pretty near where it should be by listening to yourself in the monitor mode while transmitting into a dummy load. Then have a friend help you touch it up as he listens to you over the air , or with a spectrum scope equipped receiver.
