HI Tom,
I'm 48 and grew up with tubes, had the 781 for years and loved it. I forget the heat mod...I did it to mine when I was a tech for a radio store years ago. We need to find ways to involve new hams and others in our troubleshooting and repair projects. Club members could share their projects as forums at meetings with a white board to draw and exlpain circuits being a beneficial tool. We use them in brainstorming sessions everyday....pondering issues is part of my job. Elmering is an important part of radio that we gleaned our knowledge from as young hams. Being pros in the comm world for years, we developed advanced skill sets. You mentioned PMEL...Air Force maybe? I''m retired AF and now a Navy civilian officer in R&D.
Just my two cents,
Best 73 and Happy New Year,
Cam

That's one of the easier sections to repair, though. I've done a
total of one for a friend several years ago. The 781 has serious heat
issues and Icom - or a third party - offered a mod to take care of that.

Note to Larry - you didn't sound crass, there are more appliance ops
on the list than technical folks it seems sometimes -- unfortunately
this seems to be a trend in ham radio and has for a couple decades as
the knowledgeable get older. Luckily I'm only 46 and in decent
health, and grew up on tubes as a kid - the best of both worlds.
Whole career has been comms. (with a little PMEL in between)
Best 73 again
