Allan,
There are several low cost audio amplifier kits on the market. Prices are 
around $10 - 15.
All or most of these run from a battery, however it will be simple to adopt 
a suitable wall
wart for the purpose.  One such company is Velleman.
Or do a search on the National Semiconductor site for audio amplifiers. They 
provide
complete schematic, so you 'roll your own'.  Also try the Texas Instruments 
site.
