Yes, the first Icom HF radio was the IC-701. Had the same type of
opto-interrupter VFO control found on the Icom VHF radios of the
same vintage. I also believe it was the first HF PLL radio of its
day.

I remember dreaming of owning one then, but over the years, the
current generation of radios make it seem like night and day.
However, back then, it was a slick piece of equipment.

Still got my original IC-215 crystal, and IC-22S mobile, which
were my second and third radios, the first being a Heathkit HW-16A
to get my novice.

I've owned/collected all kinds of radio since then, but my main
VHF home radio (now) is an IC-22U (that's right, the U) stuck on one
repeater freq. It's on whenever I turn on the laptop and work
the Internet. The back-up radio is the IC-910H, which I take
into the field occasionally for mobile satellite work. I'll fix a couple
of the IC-22A's when I get some spare time near the holidays,
and hook up the ID-1 again soon..
