Actually, the projected retail price of the 7700 is $6,000. The 245's
1995 price was $2,990, which would be more than $14,000 in today's
dollars based on the consumer price index.
In other words, the 7700, given, amongst other things, that it has the
6khz and 3khz roofing filters (as opposed to the 245's wide open15khz
--or was it 13) and IF-level transmit and receive DSP, not to mention a
BUNCH of other enhancements such as the scope, is actually a MUCH BETTER
BUY today than the 245 was in 1995, in spite of the seemingly "larger
price tag".
We--at least my students--tend to think that because of inflation we
"always" pay more for less, but in fact the progress of technology in
many fields (e.g., computers, cell phones, HDTV) brings prices down as
performance goes up, so contemporary products are MUCH better buys than
their seemingly much "less expensive" predecessors..
I love the 245, and it's still a great collector's item, but $14,000?
Amazing.
73 to all!!
