[ICOM] IC 725 Won't Transmit

My IC 725 started out to intermittently refuse to transmit.  I could 
fix the problem by cycling the power off and then back on after a few 
seconds.  I wasted a good six months convinced that the problem was in 
the Tarheel antenna system in my mobile, but after lending the radio 
to a friend discovered that the problem was independent of being mobile.

The radio now is virtually unusable as the period between intermittent 
  failures is only a few minutes.

Any clues out there?
