Mort,

NOPE in the IC-735 the only thing you will loose is the memories if you 
programmed them in the 735 it operates just fine with or without a good 
memory battery.

Yes if the battery dies in these products, IC-745, 751 / A, 761, R-71A, 
IC-271, 471, 1271; M700 & M700TY then you loose the operating system 
until the ram unit is reprogrammed or you buy an after market card. That 
lithium battery in those radios that are backed by them seem to last 
forever unless someone messes with them. I'll bet a poll right here you 
will be hard pressed to find 25 users who actually had the battery die. 
Most times the solder joints crack on the ram unit connectors but the 
battery is fine. The current drain last I knew was in the micro amps. 
Most every card I ever measured while I was at Icom the battery was at 
3.0 volts. I did leave there in 2001 however.
