[ICOM] IC-706 Main Tuning Knob

I have a friend who is trying to remove the main tuning knob for his IC-706.
The tuning has become sluggish, "tight" and doesn't spin freely. He cannot
figure out how to remove the main knob and get at the problem. 
 
Can anyone tell us how to remove the knob and any clues as to what the core
problem might be??
