Aaron's is my experience with the 850.

After almost 10 years with an 850, I didn't know what AGC pumping was
until I had a 756PRO. An insurance claim blessed me with a PRO III,
which is by far a superior radio, but for a while with the PRO, I was
wishing I'd never bought it.

The 850 remains one of the best radios for contesting for less than $750.

(Fast/Mid/Slow), plus "Off" if pumping is an issue. Also, the '850s
narrow-spaced dynamic range is better than many other radios and
slightly better than the ProIII (http://www.sherweng.com/table.html), though
not enough to really matter. The ProIII definitely has more features and is
at least equivalent in performance, but for the $$$, the '850 is hard to beat.

ProIII.

Under "dense" near in signal conditions the WGC pumping was more
than I could take. I operate mainly cw and had all the narrowband filters in
the rig. I traded it in on an MP, which I still have. It has its own short
comings but is much better at handling near in signals.
