Hello John,
I've been using a pair of 746s for RTTY contesting and have done
quite well. Both have the Icom digital filter, FL-232, in the 9 MHz
IF and the INRAD 400 Hz filter in the 455 KHz IF. The 746s are used
to drive GS-35B amps in a SO2R arrangement when contesting. A radio
is used on all the modes without the amp when not contesting. MFJ
4125 switching power supplies are used without any noticeable "birdies".
An improvement I hope to try soon is to install an INRAD 69.0115 MHz,
Icom 765/775 Roofing Filter, in one of the 746s. If it can be done
without degrading but, hopefully, improving the contest capability of
the radio, then will install another filter in the other 746. Not
sure if anyone has done the installation of the roofing filter in a 746.
Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the other radios.
