The Icom 781 cost about $6000 in 1990 dollars. It did
not have a memory keyer built in (just a regular
keyer), DSP, or 6 meters. The bandscope didn't work
as well as the one on the 756PRO models, and it also
just did dual watch, not true dual receive like on the
7800. Compared with what the 781 costs when it came
out, the 7800 is a better value.

 I looked at a 2007

Radios are much better values. You don't have to drop
$100 a month for insurance, plus another $100 a year
for licensing, etc. Plus electricity is cheapter than
gas.

Another way to look at it is this. You can spend
$10,000 for a 7800 or $689 for a FT857D. Both will
get you on HF and 6m. Will the 7800 allow you to work
more than the 857? Of course it will. You will hear
stuff on the 7800 you will never hear on the 857D. So
the extra money will buy you more performance, and
enable you to make contacts (the purpose of a radio)
that you couldn't on the cheapter radio.

Now you can spend $15,000 on a Honda element, or $6000
for a used Escort (like I did a couple of years ago).
Is the extra money worth it? Probably not. Will the
Element allow you to drive places the Escort can't?
No. WIll it get you to work or wherever faster? No,
so in terms of driving (the purpose for a car) you get
nothing extra for your money. You don't get any extra
driving out of it.
