If an affordable radio is what you seek, then drive business towards the
IC-718, which covers all the HF amateur bands, has built-in AF DSP, 100
memories, 100 watts, etc. for only $549. If manufacturers saw significant
growth in the lower end of the market, they would build more radios to
meet that demand.
ICOM doesn't build IC-7800s out of the goodness of their hearts. They
build them because people are buying them. And while it may be hard to
'fathom' (to use your words) there are enough buyers out there who are
not going in to debt to buy them.
