Yes! Unmodified 781 power supplies have a very high failure rate. The
temperatures measured by the thermocouples are not the point of highest
heat... Internal component temperatures are higher, but not possible to
measure directly. Nonetheless, cooling the power supply significantly
increases the rate in which heat is removed for the components. My supply
failed after about 8 years and some components had literally unsoldered
themselves. I installed the cooling kit and so far so good. Whether the
supplies are now sufficiently cooled is a matter of conjecture... But a 25
deg drop in external temperatures is certainly very significant. Also the
internal temperature of the 781 is reduced. Previously the panadapter center
frequency on my rig would drift noticeably as the set warmed up over a few
hours. That effect has been reduced.
