Paul,
I use a 706G for HF mobile in my car and have no appreciable noise
(S-meter doesn't move with attenuators off and preamp on). I wonder if
your noise goes away if you unplug the antenna connection? If so, it's
being picked up by the antenna and would be heard by any radio. The
solution is to find its source and stop it there.
Now it is possible to eliminate some of the effects of some kinds of
noise with both analog bandwidth filtering and DSP noise reduction and
blanking, but they can only do so much.
