I have had them both.
The Icom requires an AM filter if you do ANY am work.
For ME, as I was using them mobile, the Yaesu wins due to its FAR superior
noise blanker. John, as far as noise blankers go, the FT100 and Ft-857 are
the ne plus ultra for mobile.
The Icom is probably easier to negotiate through the menus, easier to see,
but for me that is not an issue as once mobile I tend to operate same band,
same mode since I use Hamstick type antennas.
If you will be fixed, check out the FT 897 -it is the same rig as the FT-857
in a larger box. Bigger display, bigger knobs.
The Yaesus have a feature that is not talked about, some like it. You can
set the screen up for different colors on different bands, modes OR-if you
dont want to bother the family, you can have the screen a certain color with
no signal, THEN it changes color when a signal apprears.....kind of neat,
you can leave the volume down.
All 3 are great, I prefer the Yaesus.
